FDA Issues Rules for Holding Suspect Food Cargoes

he U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week issued procedures for detaining food shipments suspected of being viewed as a threat to humans or animals.

The rule would allow FDA to detain a truck for up to 30 days if government officials suspect that its contents could pose a threat.

“It is another unanticipated consequence of 9/11 that happens to affect the trucking industry,” said Fletcher Hall, executive director of the Agricultural and Food Transporters Conference, which is affiliated with American Trucking Associations.



An FDA official said the agency was granted the authority to detain trucks under the Bioterrorism Act of 2002.
