The Department of Transportation and other parts of the federal government are considering bringing back the Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey, or VIUS, that was a major source of transportation data through 2002.

DOT and four other parts of the government have scheduled an online listening session for Aug. 6, from 1-3:30 p.m. EDT, to gather public comment. The departments of Agriculture, Commerce and Energy, and the Environmental Protection Agency also are participating.

The first VIUS was in 1963. Soon after, the timetable was set for once every five years, and the last survey was done in 2002. VIUS was dropped due to budgetary constraints.

VIUS used to measure the characteristics of vehicles and how they were used.

Characteristics included size, weight, age, body type, engine size and fuel type.

Operational issues were annual mileage, fleet size, fuel efficiency, products transported, range of operation and home base.
