FedEx Corp. has filled a key leadership post, naming Mark Allen to succeed Christine Richards Oct. 1 as executive vice president, general counsel and secretary.

Allen, 61, a 35-year FedEx employee, is senior vice president, legal and international general counsel at the FedEx Express subsidiary. He’s based in Europe and has had previous assignments in Memphis, Toronto and Hong Kong.

“Beginning more than 35 years ago, Mark Allen has progressed through the FedEx ranks and served in leadership roles with responsibility for every international region of the company,” FedEx chairman and CEO Frederick Smith said in a release.

FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.

“His leadership and business skills, along with his vast international experience make him an ideal choice to lead our legal, regulatory, governmental affairs, and security groups. With the addition of Mark, our Strategic Management Committee will now include six executives who have spent substantial portions of their careers working in our international regions,” Smith said.

Richards, 62, a FedEx employee since 1984, has been the company’s top legal officer since 2005. Richards’ retirement was announced in July.
