FedEx has applied for a building permit for a building project valued at $35.4 million at its world hub at Memphis International Airport.

FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest North American for-hire carriers.

The application was filed with the Memphis-Shelby County Construction Code Enforcement office on Jan. 8, the same day the company announced the official opening of a new Shanghai hub.

The FedEx Express hub at Memphis covers about 880 acres and has 3.7 million square feet of facilities.

The new Shanghai hub has about 1.4 million square feet and was reported to cost more than $100 million.
