A handful of states may have found a way to save hazardous materials transporters time and money. They are working on uniform regulations and a base-state system for registering hazmat haulers and issuing their permits, much like the International Registration Plan handles a carrier’s vehicle registrations in all the states in which it operates.

Six states are participants in the Uniform Program for Hazmat Transportation Procedures, with another to be added soon.

But they say the idea is not catching on with most of the other states due to a lack of federal support.
