Regulators, researchers and interest groups will hash out federal truck size and weight issues at a workshop that runs from May 10 to 11 in Irvine, Calif.
Sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, the session comes as the federal government works on two studies of trucking productivity, and some trucking and shipping interests lobby Congress to increase the maximum federal truck weight size to 97,000 pounds, up from the current 80,000-pound limit.
Those issues include the status of truck size and weight studies conducted by March’s team and the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences. The FHWA study is undergoing review by the Office of Management and Budget, while the TRB evaluation is scheduled for completion in 2001.

“The workshop promises to provide an opportunity to discuss in detail important issues surrounding federal truck size and weight policy,” said James W. March, head of FHWA’s industry and economic analysis team.
