Florida Eyes Open-Road Tolling

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise said Aug. 13 it had started construction on all four of its major toll plazas to convert existing electronic tolling lanes to open-road tolling lanes.

Florida’s Turnpike, a separate business unit of the Florida Department of Transportation, said the new system would help alleviate congestion by increasing the rate at which vehicles can pass through the toll plazas.

Vehicles in the open road tolling lanes will be able to travel at 55 mph rather than the current, designated speed limit of 25 mph.

Florida’s Turnpike said the project would be completed sometime this winter.
