FMCSA Extends Paperless Log Deadline

Not willing to give up on its pilot program for electronically recording driver hours of service, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has again extended the deadline for carrier participation.

Motor carriers that use global positioning systems and other safety-management computer systems now have until Dec. 29 to apply for the program. This is the second time the Department of Transportation has issued an extension.

In 1998, DOT invited carriers to help them test the effectiveness of satellite systems for tracking drivers’ hours. However, only Werner Enterprises of Omaha, Neb., agreed to test a paperless logging system.

Dave Longo, an FMCSA spokesman, said several motor carriers have expressed an interest in participating. He said carriers that volunteer to test new technologies would gain some operational benefit from their use.
