he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is looking at the possibility of mandating technology to monitor hazardous-material truck shipments, the agency’s top official said.

Administrator Annette Sandberg told a panel of Transport Topics reporters and editors recently that the agency was investigating ways to track hazmat shipments and possibly stop them if they were stolen or commandeered by terrorists.

Sandberg said the study was running “parallel” to work undertaken by California to use technology to monitor hazmat trucks and shut them down if necessary.

“We’re doing operational tests with 12 or 15 companies who have volunteered their trucks and their drivers and their dispatch centers to work with us,” Sandberg said Feb. 6.
