FMCSA Needs to Know Costs Of Safety Agenda, GAO Says

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration needs to have a better idea of how much money Congress should appropriate so the agency can fulfill its trucking safety agenda, according to the General Accounting Office.

John Anderson, GAO’s managing director, told the Senate Commerce Committee’s transportation subcommittee Feb. 14 that FMCSA has about four dozen goals it wants to accomplish but has not said how much accomplishing those tasks will cost.

“It’s a question whether they have the funds to accomplish this in the present budget or will need more. . . . Who knows, until they get a management plan,” Anderson said.

“It all goes back to the management plan,” he continued. “That’s the problem. They have not done a very good job of prioritizing, and that’s the reality of the budget process.”
