FMCSA to Review ELDs, Entry-Level Policies at MATS
Federal trucking regulators intend to host seminars on the minimum training requirements for entry-level drivers and the implementation plan for electronic logging devices at the Mid-America Trucking Show next week.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration postponed the effective date of the entry-level driver training final rule until March 21. It had been scheduled to be effective Feb. 6.
The ELD mandate takes effect at the end of the year. Industry observers expect a wider use of ELDs will lead to capacity reductions if a number of firms exit the market instead of complying with the mandate.
FMCSA also is expected to offer an update of the Compliance, Safety, Accountability safety performance scoring program, which is under review, according to people familiar with the show’s schedule. The White House has expressed an interest in rolling back key trucking policies, as well as air, water and wetlands protection regulations, a move applauded by the freight sector.
The Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville kicks off March 23, and it will feature three days of press conferences, concerts, luncheons, discussion sessions and receptions. The event is expected to draw about 70,000 attendees and more than a thousand exhibitors to the Kentucky Exposition Center.
