Federal trucking regulators on May 2 announced they are seeking public input on the applications of 21 drivers with vision impairments who are requesting waivers to drive commercial trucks.
Due to impairments in one eye, the drivers do not meet the requirements to operate trucks. Conditions range from retinal detachment to amblyopia. As part of the applications, the drivers submitted medical evaluations to support their merits.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is gathering public input on the drivers’ applications through June 1. FMCSA exemptions will be issued the day after the comment period closes, the notice in the Federal Register said. The Federal Register details the drivers’ background and ways to comment on the matter.
On April 28, FMCSA issued vision waivers to 22 drivers, also following a public comment period.
