FMCSA Shuts Down Three Chicago-Area Moving Companies
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shut down and fined three Chicago-area movers due to safety and consumer-protection violations.
White Glove Relocation Services, Able Moving and Best Price Moving & Storage had their operating authority revoked or suspended, the agency said. Best Price has since corrected the problems and has been allowed to resume operations.
“Moving is stressful enough without families having to worry whether or not their possessions will arrive safely,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Wednesday.
DOT “is cracking down on dishonest movers and working hard to educate families on how to avoid them in the first place,” he said in a statement.
The companies were investigated by FMCSA’s moving-fraud task force, established last year after a Senate report identified numerous complaints about Chicago-area movers.
“Our moving-fraud task force is working to identify the unscrupulous companies,” FMCSA Administrator Anne Ferro said.
White Glove was shut down and fined for not having a drug and alcohol testing program, using a driver who was not medically qualified and consumer-protection violations, including not releasing paid-for goods.
Able Moving, which does business as Father & Sons Moving Service, was shut down and fined for not having a drug and alcohol testing program and holding goods hostage, the agency said.
Best Price was shut down and fined for keeping improper driver qualification and logbook files and fined for consumer-protection violations.
Able Moving and Best Price did not return messages seeking comment, and White Glove’s listed phone number was disconnected.
