Self-driving vehicle company Forterra and cargo-handling equipment manufacturer Kalmar have signed an agreement to jointly develop autonomous terminal tractors.
Kalmar, which is part of Cargotec Corp., will build an automation-ready terminal tractor while Forterra integrates its AutoDrive autonomous driving system with that vehicle platform, the companies said in a March 13 announcement.
“We believe that automated operations will eventually become the standard in the container-handling industry, and there is huge potential in automating terminal tractors in terms of safety and productivity,” said Juuso Kanner, vice president of Kalmar’s automation business line.
Forterra, formerly known as Robotic Research Autonomous Industries, has developed autonomous driving and driver-assist technologies for a variety of industries and use cases, including automated military vehicles for the Department of Defense. The Clarksburg, Md.-based company also has been applying its technology to commercial vehicles.
“This agreement brings together our vast experience in developing world-class autonomous systems and Kalmar’s extensive experience in port and terminal automation with their market-leading terminal tractor product,” Forterra CEO Josh Araujo said in the announcement.
Other developers of autonomous terminal tractors include Outrider, ISEE and Fernride.
