Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the administration is “close” to naming a permanent administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Foxx made the remark Oct. 20 during a visit to Detroit, his office confirmed.
The secretary did not indicate whether President Obama would nominate NHTSA’s deputy administrator, David Friedman, to fill the post.
Freidman was put in charge of the agency on an acting basis in January when David Strickland resigned.
Foxx and the White House have not commented about the timing for another critical appointment within the Department of Transportation, a new administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Anne Ferro left that post in August, and Scott Darling, FMCSA’s top lawyer, was named acting administrator.
