Freight Network, Spending Plan Contained in Transportation Bill

A bipartisan transportation reauthorization bill being prepared by four key United States senators would map out a national network of freight corridors and dedicate a percentage of Highway Trust Fund dollars to road projects within that network, a Senate staff member said.

Under the terms of the bill to be unveiled this month, each state would receive an allocation to spend on projects that speed the movement of goods along the network, a Republican staffer told Transport Topics.

In addition, the bill would designate freight as a core program within the Federal Highway Administration, a move the source called “historic.”

Four senators announced May 25 they had reached agreement on a reauthorization bill.
