The Department of Transportation’s freight transportation services index for May rose 2.1% from a year ago, and showed a month-to-month gain, DOT said Wednesday.
The freight index level rose to a reading of 111.4, over last May’s 109.2, DOT said.
The 1.9% jump from April to May was the biggest monthly increase since January, the department said.
The 2.8% increase in the freight index since December marked the fifth consecutive year the index increased in the first five months.
The TSI is a seasonally adjusted monthly index measuring the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipeline and local transit.
