Freightliner to Inspect Trucks for Potential ABS Defects

Freightliner Corp. has authorized its dealers to begin inspecting some 45,000 trucks, tractors and buses that are equipped with a potentially defective antilock braking system which has been recalled by Bendix Corp.

The company called its action the second phase of its response to news of a defect that could cause the brakes to fail on some 300,000 trucks, buses and emergency service vehicles ("Faulty Antilock Brakes Prompts Recall of 300,000 Trucks, Buses," 9-11, p. 5).

According to a press release issued by the Portland, Ore., manufacturer, the first priority recall was for some 6,000 buses and emergency vehicles.

The second phase of the recall, begun Sept. 8, was to notify owners of some 35,400 Sterling trucks and 3,600 Freightliner trucks, built between Feb.13, 1998 and Aug. 16.
