Freightliner Recalls 1,248 M2 Trucks

Freightliner Trucks has issued a recall for 1,248 of its M2 models built in February and March because of faulty software related to the operation of headlights.

The report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by Daimler Trucks North America, Freightliner’s parent, said the M2 software has been turning off the low-beam light when the high beam is on.

When working properly, both lamps should burn during high-beam operation.

“The driver may perceive a lack of foreground lighting while driving in certain conditions with the high beams on. This may increase the risk of crash,” DTNA told NHTSA. The same document estimated that 100% of the vehicles recalled will have the problem.

DTNA said it will notify customers of the problem by mail by July 9, and that the problem can be repaired with a software update.
