Freightliner Sees Lower Interest in APUs as Carriers Focus on Cost of ’07 Engines

lthough fleets’ interest in auxiliary power units is growing, officials at Freightliner Trucks said they expect demand to slow temporarily this year as carriers concentrate their spending on current trucks rather than those coming in January.



 

 

Other truck manufacturers said they are preparing to offer APUs as anti-idling laws by states and local governments proliferate.

 

APUs can reduce truckers’ need to idle their engines to power cab features such as heat and air conditioning, and although they reduce fuel expenses, they add to the initial cost of trucks.
