Freightliner ‘Specs’ Used Trucks for New Customers

TOOELE, Utah — Freightliner Corp. has begun a remanufacturing program aimed at creating a “used truck product line” to compete with both the new and used trucks of other manufacturers.

In a press conference here Aug. 29, James Hebe, chief executive officer of Freightliner, outlined a plan to rebuild trucks taken in trade and to market them with extensive warranties and special financing to customers who can’t afford to purchase new trucks.

Hebe said the main feature that distinguishes the Freightliner program from other refurbishing programs is that this is “done in a factory environment,” which he said reduces cost and improves efficiency.

The factory environment also lets potential customers “spec” their rebuilt used trucks as they would do when buying new trucks.
