FTC To Review Comdata Licenses

The Federal Trade Commission, bent on keeping Comdata Corp. from limiting competition in the fleet card industry, has obtained authority to approve the company’s licensing agreements.

The commission reached a consent agreement April 6 with Comdata, the nation’s leading fleet card supplier, based in Brentwood, Tenn. The company drew agency’s attention with the $50 million purchase of its most significant competitor, NTS Corp., in 1998. It raised concerns at FTC that Comdata could block the use of competing fuel cards.

Mike Brewer, a spokesman for Comdata, said the company was pleased with the agreement.

“We never denied access to our system,” he said. “We have granted access every time a company has asked for it.”
