Ga. Trucker Pleads Guilty to Helping Violate OOS Order

The owner of a Georgia trucking company has pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to violate an imminent hazard out-of-service order issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Corey Daniels entered the plea Jan. 31 in the United States District Court in Macon, Ga., the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General said.

Devasco Lewis, who did business as Lewis Trucking Co., was issued the out-of-service order in October 2008, said OIG, which investigated the matter. With Daniels’ help, Lewis attempted to circumvent the order in a process called “reincarnation” by creating two new trucking companies under Daniels’ identity in an attempt to avoid FMCSA scrutiny.

Lewis pled guilty to violating the out-of-service order in May 2012, OIG said. He was sentenced to six months in jail and 12 months supervised release and fined $3,000.

Attempts by Transport Topics to reach Daniels were unsuccessful.
