Gasoline Demand Slips, Leaving Other Fuels to Pick Up Slack
America’s most popular fuel hasn’t been feeling the love. U.S. gasoline consumption dropped even as overall fuel demand posted an increase this year.
U.S. drivers bought 9.32 million barrels per day this year through September, 0.3% lower from a year ago, according to data from the American Petroleum Institute.
The reversal of fortune comes as demand for gasoline and other transportation fuels may have faltered as hurricanes slammed Florida and Texas.
Distillates, which includes diesel and heating oils, and jet fuel have been left to pick up the slack. Distillates rose 2.3%, while jet fuel climbed 3.7% versus last year, contributing to the 1.2% increase in petroleum products demand.
