Gore Unveils Anti-Sprawl Campaign

The anti-sprawl campaign unveiled by Vice President Al Gore Jan. 11 includes increased funding for congestion mitigation, transportation planning and mass transit programs, the Department of Transportation says.

The "Livability Agenda" is designed to ensure a high quality of life and strong, sustainable economic growth, Mr. Gore said. Transportation elements of the plan including easing traffic congestion by improving road planning, strengthening existing transportation systems and expanding the use of alternative transportation such as bicycles.

The Department of Transportation estimates that highway delays and congestion will cost Americans 22.3 billion hours of lost time and in $293 billion in lost revenue or income by the Year 2000.
