Group Urges End to Transit Funds

Citizens Against Government Waste, America’s largest taxpayer watchdog group, is recommending the federal government repeal the estate tax, stop funding for mass transit programs and phase out its operating subsidy for Amtrak.

Congress has enacted legislation to repeal the estate tax, a step that has been advocated by small business operations, including trucking companies. The Republican-sponsored bill faces a vetoe by President Clinton, who has said the measure drains future money away from Medicare and Social Security.

CAGW in its Aug. 7 report titled “Prime Cuts” recommended the federal government review mass transit funding and its spending on Amtrak.
