Heil Trailer International Co. has announced the availability of a 5-axle, 12,000-gallon petroleum trailer intended to enable customers in the Western United States to haul more in fewer runs.

The new trailer is the result of a collaboration between Heil and its Salt Lake City dealer, Semi Service, to design a trailer with greater hauling capability for Sinclair Oil, which has used Heil products for more than 30 years. Heil designed the trailer to meet transportation challenges in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, South Dakota, Washington, Oregon and Montana.

An alternative to standard 4-axle, 11,500-gallon petroleum trailers, the 5-axle variant is manufactured with aluminum components that help minimize tare weight. This lightweight, aerodynamic design has been shown to reduce fuel consumption by 8%. It has a lower center of gravity that enhances rollover stability, and increases payload by as much as 6%, according to the Athens, Tenn.-based company.

“The 5-axle trailer provides straighter and more controlled braking, so our drivers feel more comfortable operating it over driving pup trailers,” Danny Hansen, manager of truck operations at Sinclair Oil, said in a release. — Transport Topics
