High Court to Hear Argument in Mexican Truck Entry Case

Justices to Examine Decision on Environmental Review

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>The Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments this week reviewing a lower court decision requiring the government to conduct an environmental impact review before allowing Mexican trucks to deliver goods throughout the United States.

Mexican trucks had been banned from operating on U.S. highways under a moratorium the Clinton administration imposed, but an arbitrator ruled in 2001 that the moratorium violated the North American Free Trade Agreement.

In 2002, President Bush said he intended to open the border, and shortly afterward, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released rules that would allow Mexican trucks to enter the country and established procedures for monitoring Mexican truck safety in the United States.
