Trucking industry executives and stakeholders will have the chance to share insight and perspective with House lawmakers on Dec. 6 when they meet for a roundtable discussion about policy for autonomous vehicles in the coming years.
In October, American Trucking Associations President Chris Spear called on Congress to take the lead on policy decisions regarding self-driving commercial technology. He spoke in a panel discussion hosted by Securing America’s Future Energy, an energy security advocate.

Highways and Transit Subcommittee Chairman Sam Graves (R-Mo.) will lead the roundtable. Spear will be among the participants, along with Blair Anderson, undersecretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, David Strickland, counsel and spokesman of the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets, and David Zuby, executive vice president and chief research officer at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued guidelines in September for states looking to regulate autonomous vehicles. The agency requests that automakers submit safety assessments detailing how they would monitor cybersecurity and infrastructure recognition. Proponents of the guidelines have argued longhaul trucking is an ideal forum for the self-driving technology.
