Hunt to Divide Intermodal, Van Units

Nearly 10 years after signing its first contract to move truckload shipments by rail, J.B. Hunt Transport Services has decided to separate its intermodal operations from its truckload van business.

The decision, which has been under consideration for several years, was prompted by persistent rail service failures and represents a possible first step towards establishing a stand-alone intermodal freight business.

J.B. Hunt jolted the truckload industry in 1989 by forming an alliance with the Santa Fe Railway (now part of Burlington Northern Santa Fe) to haul trailers between the West Coast and the Midwest. The company later converted its entire trailer fleet to containers that can be used on the highway or on railroads.

Recent problems with rail service, however, have hurt J.B. Hunt’s trucking business.
