Idaho Senate Votes to Scrap Ton-Mile Tax
The Idaho Senate addressed the state’s weight-distance tax problems by unanimously voting to scrap the beleaguered system and replace it with higher truck registration fees, much as other former ton-mile tax states have done.
The lawmakers also worked on legislation that would give back $27 million to those who overpaid the tax, according to the ruling.

Actual elimination of the weight-distance levy needs the agreement of the Idaho House of Representatives and Gov. Dirk Kempthorne.
The state Senate acted March 28 in response to a federal court’s ruling that Idaho’s two-tiered weight-distance tax discriminates against interstate carriers. The ruling came in a lawsuit brought by American Trucking Associations.
