Industry to Study Western Size, Weight Laws

State officials and their industry partners are getting started on a new size and weight study designed to home in on freight movement in the western United States.

The study was requested in 1999 by the Western Governors’ Association. It will focus on truck weights and the use of longer combination vehicles in western states.

Some in trucking hope to use the findings to lobby Congress to harmonize the size and weight regulations and truck routes of western states.

The study is still in its infancy. The Federal Highway Administration held a meeting in Salt Lake City recently to get industry input on what LCV configurations should be looked at and how the research should be carried out.
