The Surface Transportation Board won praise from the Department of Transportation’s inspector general for addressing concerns raised in a November audit of the agency’s fee structure (11- 30, p. 2).

Assistant Inspector General Lawrence Weintrob said the STB has issued policy statements explaining how it plans to determine current and future fees.

Weintrob praised the STB for suggesting new fees to help offset its cost of doing business and for increasing other fees.

The November audit found that the board lacks a way to verify that the fees it charges cover the cost of providing services.
