U.S. rail intermodal traffic declined 3.3% in the week ended Feb. 7 compared with the same week last year, the Association of American Railroads reported.
Railroads moved 237,915 intermodal trailers and containers, AAR said Feb. 11 in its weekly report. The decline follows a rise of 1.1% to 249,910 units the prior week.
Rail carload volume, which excludes intermodal units, increased 0.8% year-over-year to 511,563 carloads.
Eight of the 10 commodity groups AAR tracks increased over last year, led by grain at 15.9%.
Intermodal volume for all of North America dipped 0.7% to 303,894 trailers and containers.
Canadian railroads moved 56,229 intermodal units, an 11% increase. Mexican rail moved 9,750 units, a 4.2% rise from the same time last year.
Year-to-date U.S. intermodal traffic is flat compared with the same period last year at 1.24 million units.
