U.S. intermodal traffic rose 3% last week from a year ago, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday.
Container traffic rose 3.3% to 213,859 units, while trailer traffic increased 1.2% to 34,543 units.
Intermodal volume for the U.S., Canada and Mexico combined rose 3.5% to 311,125 trailers and containers, a record.
Railroad carloads excluding intermodal rose 1.1%, to 305,133 units, AAR said in its weekly report.
Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the long haul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip.
