Intermodal traffic volume gained 8.4% in the fourth quarter, an improvement over the fourth quarter’s decline of 6.4%, the Intermodal Association of North America said.
Domestic container volume showed the strongest growth of all the categories IANA tracks, gaining 15.7% to 1,034,036 units in the quarter, the group said Thursday.
The domestic container gain shows that the increase in volume “is not just a rebound from last year’s depressed volume levels,” IANA said.
Trailers declined 5.9% in the first quarter to 383,364, from 407,206 last year. All domestic equipment grew 9% to 1,417,400 units, while international containers increased 7.8% to 1,601,910.
Traffic in each region grew at least 6% in the quarter, except the Southwest, which gained 2.8%.
