LONG BEACH, Calif. — The Intermodal Association of North America kicked off its annual exhibition Sept. 10 by recognizing the accomplishments of outgoing President Joni Casey.

IANA Intermodal Expo 2024 brings together professionals from across the industry with the aim of tackling the most pressing issues in the intermodal space. Casey used the occasion to reiterate her retirement after leading the organization for nearly three decades as president and CEO.

“I’d like to … recognize an individual, without whom, I believe, IANA would have not reached its size, its influence and its effectiveness working for and representing the intermodal freight community,” Chairman Trevor Ash said. “For the past 27 years, Joni has grown IANA as an organization just as the industry itself evolved and matured.”

Ash noted how membership expanded during her tenure and highlighted how she worked to expand technology programs that have facilitated business processes and efficiencies. IANA’s scholarship program also has been one of her major focuses since its inception.

“As an enduring testament to Joni’s dedication to developing talent for intermodal’s future through the scholarship program she helped create and nurture, on behalf of IANA’s board of directors, I’m honored to announce the rededication of the program as the Joanne F. Casey Scholarship Program.”

Casey announced her plans to retire from leading IANA on July 17, and a search for her successor is ongoing. She credited her success to the collaborative efforts of professionals throughout the association.

“I will be retiring from IANA at the end of this year,” Casey said. “One of life’s other appreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on, and it’s time. Leading IANA for the last 27 years has been an extraordinary privilege. One that has allowed me to work alongside a diverse consortium of intermodal transportation providers, suppliers and an exceptional board of directors over the years.”

IANA Academic Challenge

Also during the opening session, the University of Tennessee was announced as the winner of the IANA Academic Challenge. The competition was held a day earlier and involved teams from undergraduate schools that receive scholarships from the association. This year, the focus was on attracting new drivers to the industry.

Larry Gross, president of Gross Transportation Consulting in Durango, Colo., and a 44-year industry veteran, received the Silver Kingpin Award.

“The Silver Kingpin Award is intended to recognize exceptional contributions of an individual or individuals who have had a significant impact on the growth and advancement of the intermodal freight and transportation industry,” Ash said.

“This year’s recipient is a gentleman who has certainly had that impact. who has specialized in intermodal and rail transport. He is perhaps most closely associated with the roadrailer intermodal system,” he added.
