International Motors has certified its S13 integrated powertrain for renewable diesel, offering fleets a low-carbon alternative to petroleum-based fuels, the company announced Jan. 15.
Renewable diesel, often referred to as R100 or R99, is derived from recycled vegetable oils, tallow or used cooking oil. The fuel burns cleaner than traditional diesel, reduces carbon emissions and is compatible with existing diesel engines. Unlike biodiesel, it contains no oxygen compounds, which improves cold-weather performance and storage stability.
Michael Noonan, vice president of engineering at International Motors, underscored the fuel’s regulatory compliance and environmental benefits.

“Renewable diesel fuel meets the ASTM D975 Diesel Fuel Specification or the EN 15940 Paraffinic Diesel Fuel Specification, has better storage capabilities than biodiesel, and contains less sulfur and ash than petroleum-based diesel fuel, which contribute to its lower tailpipe emissions,” he said.

The S13 integrated powertrain, available in the LT, RH, HX and HV Series trucks, combines an engine, T14 transmission and aftertreatment system. It delivers up to 515 horsepower and 1,850 pound-feet of torque, with a focus on improving efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Chet Ciesielski, vice president of International’s on-highway business, emphasized the importance of offering solutions tailored to diverse needs.
“Our mission at International is to accelerate the impact of sustainable mobility,” he said. “There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for every customer, so it is crucial that we offer incremental options to help them achieve their objectives.”
Renewable diesel is produced through a hydrotreating process that converts fats, oils and agricultural waste into fuel. The process results in a paraffinic fuel with a high cetane number, leading to cleaner combustion and reduced emissions.
By certifying the S13 powertrain for renewable diesel, International Motors aims to provide fleets with a practical option for reducing emissions while maintaining operational reliability.
