Iowa Company Must Be Monitored

An Iowa judge ordered a trucking company convicted of falsifying driver logbooks to implement a monitoring system and pay fines.

Chief Judge Michael J. Melloy sentenced Shuttle Service Express of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to three years’ probation, a $50,000 fine and a $200 special assessment. Mr. Melloy also ordered the company to implement a monitoring system to prevent further logbook violations.

Shuttle Express pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to defraud the government and to making false statements on drivers’ logs on July 21, 1998.

The company’s owner, John Hoth, and five drivers have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced in connection with the crimes (TT, 12-7-98, p. 4). A search is under way for a sixth employee, William E. Boots, who failed to appear for his sentencing on Dec. 1.
