iTECH: Keeping a Lid on Maintenance Costs

Keeping a major department store chain supplied with manufactured goods is no simple matter. With 125 department stores, 37 furniture stores, 17 outlets, 132 dealer locations and 2,157 mail order sites, Sears Canada requires enormous quantities of goods, delivered on time.

Since 1985, the carrier that has been ensuring the goods reach their destinations in a timely manner is SLH Transport of Kingston, Ontario. Formerly a division of Sears Canada, SLH is now Canada’s third-largest trucking firm. What's more, the carrier credits much of its success to computer software that helps keep a tight rein on maintenance costs.

Though SLH is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sears Canada, it also moves freight for other shippers, using a mix of company-owned and operator-owned trucks.
