J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. signed a service agreement with Trailer Bridge Inc. to combine resources between the mainland United States and Puerto Rico, the motor carrier announced Sept. 16.

Trailer Bridge, based in Jacksonville, Florida, specializes in cargo shipping between the two locations using 53-foot containers and barges. The deal will make J.B. Hunt’s more than 80,000 containers available to ship freight.

The partners also will have a jointly owned chassis fleet rather than outsourcing the equipment to another company.

“This joint service offering creates an enormous advantage for our current and future clients,” said Mitch Luciano,  CEO of Trailer Bridge.

According to J.B. Hunt, containers will be hauled by dray to the nearest rail site, transported to the Port of Jacksonville, then loaded onto a Trailer Bridge barge.

The Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico, ranks No. 12 in the United States in container volume per year, according to the American Association of Port Authorities.

J.B. Hunt, which is based in Lowell, Arkansas, ranks No. 4 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
