Knight Transportation said late Wednesday its first-quarter profit improved despite a “challenging operating and economic environment” and industrywide concerns over finding qualified drivers.

Net income rose to $15.2 million, or 19 cents a share, from $10.5 million, or 13 cents, a year earlier. Revenue rose 7.2% to $235.4 million.

“Our ability to deliver revenue growth . . . despite a challenging operating and economic environment, is a testament of our people, the value of our services to our customers, and the company we are building,” CEO Kevin Knight said.

“Several years ago, we only provided dry van truckload services. Today, we are a company that provides a wide range of truckload logistics services [and] are finding the most efficient ways to move loads for our customers,” he said in a statement.

Knight Transportation is ranked No. 30 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
