Former Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will headline a Senate Finance panel hearing June 18 focusing on highway funding.
The hearing will be held a day after the Ways and Means Committee in the House, which also has jurisdiction over tax policy, holds a hearing on long-term funding for highway programs.
Last month, LaHood, the co-chairman of the Building America’s Future nonprofit, called on lawmakers to approve a sustainable plan for the Highway Trust Fund. The account will need about $8 billion through the end of the year to ensure steady reimbursements to states for big-ticket transportation projects.

“What built America was the big pot of money that we call the Highway Trust Fund. That’s what built the interstate. That’s what built the bridges,” LaHood said.
Also testifying before the Senate panel will be Joseph Kile, assistant director for Microeconomic Studies Division at the Congressional Budget Office, and Stephen Moore, distinguished visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based think tank.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Room 215 at the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
