Layoffs, Job Cuts Soar As New-Truck Orders Fall

Layoffs and job eliminations among major truck manufacturers topped 11,900 this year as companies cut back production to try to match costs with falling orders.

Trouble began in late 1999 when Volvo Trucks North America furloughed 400 employees.

At Freightliner, the nation’s biggest original equipment manufacturer, matters were complicated by a contract dispute at the company’s Mount Holly, N.C., plant.

Freightliner President James Hebe told the Associated Press that the plant is scheduled to shut down for maintenance on Dec. 22, the day the company’s contract with the United Auto Workers expires.
