Mack to Add Two Natural-Gas Models

Mack Trucks said it will add over-the-road and dump truck models to its lineup of heavy-duty vehicles powered by natural gas.

The Mack Pinnacle for highway service and the Granite model will be offered next year after testing in 2012 by customers, using Cummins Westport’s ISX12G engine, Mack said.

Both CNG and LNG models will be offered, and Mack said it is also considering alternative drivelines.

Mack, Greensboro, N.C., now offers TerraPro Low Entry and TerraPro Cabover models powered by natural gas that are used in the refuse industry.

Both new models will need a three-way catalyst to meet Environmental Protection Agency 2010 and California Air Resources Board standards, which Mack said was an advancement to lower ownership costs.

“Customers within the regional haul, LTL and construction segments will have the benefits of natural gas combined with the power and performance they expect,” said Kevin Flaherty, president of Mack’s North American sales and marketing.
