WINNSBORO, S.C. — After two and a half years of research and development, Mack Trucks is ready to roll the dice in a bet that it can claim a major share of the long-haul truck market.

The vehicle for this gamble is called “Vision.” It is bigger, more aerodynamic and lighter than any truck now made by the company.

The truck is aimed at a segment of the market called “super-regional,” said Paul L. Vikner, executive vice president of sales and marketing. This segment involves 1,000- to 1,200-mile hauls but falls short of coast-to-coast or border-to-border business, he explained.
