LAS VEGAS — Voicing renewed optimism in the heavy truck market, Michel Gigou, president of Mack Trucks, introduced a new, lightweight, day-cab version of the over-the-road Vision model.
Although Mack had recently announced it was reducing production because of flagging sales, Gigou said the company might have been too pessimistic. This year could end with a sales figure of 230,000 to 235,000 Class 8 trucks, he said.

The new truck was unveiled at a June 28 press conference at the International Truck Show, which ran through June 30 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Gigou said orders for Class 8 trucks might create a year that mirrors 1998 — a year that set a record with more than 200,000 retail sales. That record was eradicated the following year, when 260,000 were sold in 1999.
