he Maryland Transportation Authority took the first step toward raising tolls on several key trucking routes in that state at its Sept. 29 board meeting.

The authority gave preliminary approval to raising tolls by as much as 100% on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (Interstate 95), the Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695), the Fort McHenry (I-95) and Baltimore Harbor (I-895) tunnels and the Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge (U.S. 40).

Under the proposal, tolls for the two tunnels and Key Bridge would double to $8 each way for five-axle trucks. On the Kennedy Highway and the Hatem Bridge, five-axle truck tolls would increase 25% to $25. Those tolls are only collected in one direction.
