Maryland Kills Ton-Mile Tax Bill

A bill that would have created a weight-distance tax in Maryland has gotten the legislative ax.

The proposal was unanimously rejected March 17 by the Maryland House Ways and Means Committee.

The bill was sponsored by Delegate Leon G. Billings and would have imposed a weight-distance tax on top of Maryland’s $1,300 registration truck fee for trucks and gallon diesel fuel levy of 24.25 cents a gallon (2-28, p. 7). The tax rate would have been 13.65 cents a mile for an 80,000-pound truck.
