Members of Two ATA Councils Asked to Approve Merger

Leaders of two of American Trucking Associations’ educational councils have hammered out details of a merger plan.

If approved by their members in a mail ballot, the Transportation Loss Prevention & Security Council and the Safety Management Council will become the ATA Safety & Loss Prevention Management Council by year’s end. The ballot was scheduled to go out this week.

A committee would be formed in August to nominate and select officers under the new structure. The slate of leaders would take office at the end of the Safety Management Conference in St. Louis Oct. 4.

“We think it’s going to be a win-win for members of both groups,” said Clay Thomas, first vice chairman of the safety council and director of safety for Central Freight Line in Waco, Texas. Thomas made the comments June 26 during a meeting at which leaders of the two groups put together consolidation plans. The name change was approved by ATA July 5.
